The pharmaceutical sector is at the center of society.
The Netherlands has more than 11.5 million medicine users, and the chances are that you are or know one of them. Thanks in part to medicines and vaccines, people live longer and suffer less pain or other complaints. In this way we save a lot of costs on other care. In addition, relieved patients can rejoin society and contribute to our economy. In short, medicines are not a cost but an investment in a healthy society!
Research in Ireland, Austria and Portugal shows that every euro invested in medicines yields more than double the return. This illustrates the close connection between society, drug companies, science and government. The recent COVID-19 crisis showed that working together for better health pays off. Just one year after the start of this unprecedented pandemic, four vaccines have been approved in Europe. In the second year, more vaccines and medicines followed, playing an important role in reopening the world.
Even without a pandemic, the sector is aware of its great responsibility. That is why we like to show what we do, with facts and dialogue as key words. Full of pride we hereby present this first version of Medicines for Society.
Sustainability is an important topic for our companies. Think of cleaner medicine production, less waste and less medicine residue in the water. Here too we need each other very much, for example in the collection of unused medicines.
The Code of and for the members of our association is unique in the world and secures our societal responsibility. The more than forty companies affiliated with the Dutch Association Innovative Medicines have signed 40 agreements on integrity, societal responsibility, quality and transparency. Based on reactions from society, we regularly tighten up these agreements.
Those who work on health, at the heart of society, are never done. For example, it is good news that 65% of patients with cancer are still alive after five years. For patients, it is extremely important to have quick access to innovative medicines.
You can read more about it on the following pages, substantiated by figures. We like to talk about more and better connectedness. You know where to find us!
